Eventually, one of its major components would fail, and it would no longer be able to do that, and then it would likely be scrapped, but until it no longer functions as a car or personal transportation, we shouldn’t just be scrapping shit that could change lives.Įven once it DOES suffer some sort of major failure, taking it to a high school auto class to replace a head gasket or even just replacing an alternator may put it back on the road to be able to make a major difference in someone’s life. Even with whatever problems it did have, it had usable life left and likely of life-changing value to someone without a car.Įven if it’s new owner couldn’t afford to fix this or that on it, the ability to throw gas in it and go from point A to point B for a very reasonable price has value. My point was that it shouldn’t have been headed to the scrap yard to begin with. Subaru also sells short blocks cheap enough that it's not worth the labour to fix the bad ones, so they make money there. Their dealers make a lot of money off these problems. So did Subaru notice all these problems and engineer solutions? Not quickly. So they wear out the aluminum there and start catching.

A mechanic will happily pull your motor and tear it down and charge you $$$$ only to find the tensioner needed to be replaced. Then the tensioner slaps and sounds like a rod knock. The oil thickens and pushes out past the seal on really cold starts. Then the tensioners themselves don't like the cold climate. You can google and find many cases of people being screwed by this. And it's a Goldilocks bolt: they are easy to break through over torque or just back out through lack of torque. Torque spec is 12 ft / lbs for some of the replacement tensioner kits. Anything goes wrong with that belt or idlers or tensioner and you're up for a lot of $$$. Subaru has some of the few motors that run a timing belt AND are interference. Apparently subaru consider the PCV a wear item to be replaced every 3rd oil change. Then starve the bearings and get a knock or throw a rod. The get stuck open and suck all of the oil out of the crank case. But you cannot easily do that job without pulling the motor.

They are notorious for the head gasket issues. Here as the issues I have personally run into with the non-turbo EJs because my wife and her friends own them (AWD is necessity in the high country): I think Subaru engineering has the opposite: let's see how long the rubes keep buying this faulty crap.
